History
The internet has come a long way. It was earlier envisioned in the 1960′s as a tool for sharing information on research and development in scientific and military fields. The first breakthrough took place in 1965 when the theory of packet switching was developed by Leonard Kleinrock of MIT and later UCLA, which was to form the basis of internet connections. Lawrence Roberts’ successful effort in connecting a Massachusetts computer with a California computer in 1965 over dial-up telephone lines showed the feasibility of wide area networking over telephones line.
More significant breakthroughs were introduced to include the globalization of the packet switching technology in 1973, the improvement of network intercommunication with the design of TCP (Transmission Control Program) in 1974, the development of UNIX in 1976, the development of the network discussion group USENET in 1979, the introduction of the internet protocol in 1982, the start of growth of hosts in 1984 , the introduction of the World Wide Web in 1991 and the introduction of internet streaming in 1995.
From the plain text based and static website internet content, the internet has evolved into dynamic and multimedia contents. Today internet is not just being used for information sharing. Its useful application is also evident in business, communication, research and education. More importantly the internet has become a social networking tool.
Websites are everywhere and they continue to grow exponentially. Everyone can make his or her own website and offer something to internet visitors. These websites have become the life blood of the internet. With the tools around for making websites and the improving internet connection, surfing the internet has become more fun and exciting as it brings about something new everyday.
